a lot, and nothing, all at once

School has been out for Jboy for a little over a month now. For the most part we haven’t really done anything. We’ve had a couple of play dates with friends, and he went to Vacation Bible School a couple of weeks ago, but that’s about it. It’s been so stinkin’ hot here that I avoid going outside if at all possible. Hopefully we can get together with friends more in the coming weeks.

Otherwise the past week has been a little crazy. Chris went for a physical last month at the request of his mother. He’d been tired a lot over the past several months, and she wanted him to get checked out. It’s a good thing he did. Last week he was officially diagnosed with Diabetes.

At his physical, they ran some fasting blood work. Included in that was a glucose test. He’d been fasting for like 15 hours and his blood sugar was 272!!! Normal, for fasting, is like 100. Um, yeah. They sent him for another test, Hemoglobin A1c, which tests something like how long it takes your body to burn sugar. Normal is under 6%; Chris’ was 13.8%. Again, not good.

Next his doctor wanted him to see an Endocrinologist. The appointment was at noon, so he didn’t fast. The first thing the nurse did was ask Chris if he’d eaten & what. He’d had a bowl of Raisin Bran and some chocolate milk at around 10:00 for breakfast, then drank a 12oz Coke on the way to the appointment. She pricked his finger & then had us guess what the soda had done to his blood sugar. Chris’ guess was around 250 & mine was around there. What was it really? 410!!! Whoa nelly. Not good.

The doctor came in a short time later & asked if he’d been dealing with diabetes for awhile. We were like, “he officially has it?” The doctor said, “Oh, yes definitely.” We hadn’t actually heard the words “you have diabetes”, so I guess we were thinking there was still a chance he didn’t have it.

So, now he “gets” to give himself insulin shots once a day (for now) and take two pills in the morning with breakfast. The number one rule that the doctor gave Chris is no more regular soda & no more sweet tea. My poor southern hubby.

We’ve already been making as many changes as we know to do, and this week we have an appointment with a dietitian. I know we’ll both be glad to get some real answers as to what he should/shouldn’t eat. The internet is a wealth of information but, unfortunately, sometimes it’s conflicting information.

That’s what’s going on with us right now. A lot, and nothing, all at once.

Friday 56 – Between Here and April

Another book meme. I saw it on Proud Book Nerd, and it’s being hosted by Storytime with Tonya.

* Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
* Turn to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post that sentence (plus one or two others if you like) along with these instructions on your blog or (if you do not have your own blog) in the comments section of this blog.
* Post a link along with your post back to this blog.
* Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

I’m sitting near our bookshelf, so all the books are the same distance. I just went over & picked one.

The question was how to approach him. A phone call? An email? No. A letter. Handwritten, on good stationery. Like a condolence card, only thirty-five years late.

Storytime Live!

Saturday, Haley & I took Jboy to the Fox Theater to see Nickelodeon's Storytime Live. It's a live show with some of the characters from shows on Nick Jr. Jboy had a great time participating & dancing around. During the finale the whole cast came out & sang "Shout". I think he jumped the entire time.

Thanks Auntie Haley for the tickets!

Momma & her boy.

First cotton candy experience. Guess what... he liked it! ;D

The finale! It was great fun & I hope we can take him to more shows like this!

I’ve seen blog awards go around before, but have never received one. Not to say I ever expected to, I’m just saying.

Imagine my surprise when I receive two in one day! First, from Busy Moms Who Love to Read, I received the Honest Scrap Award. honest_scrap_award

Then, from Proud Book Nerd, the Versatile Blogger Award.

Thanks ladies!

Here’s how they work:

For the Honest Scrap Award, I am to list 10 honest things about myself and pass the award on to 7 blogs.

For the Versatile Blogger Award, you must share seven things about yourself and then pass it on to 15 blogs you have recently discovered that you enjoy!

Since they’re pretty similar, I’m going to kind of combine the two. Okay, let’s see, 10 things about myself:

1. Somehow I’ve gotten in the habit of watching Roseanne {yes, the TV show from the 80s & 90s} before I go to sleep. I’ve probably seen every episode 50 times, but I can’t turn it off.

2. I love to read. My favorite book of all time is Pretense by Lori Wick. I recently read The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and it’s a close second.

3. I have never broken a bone. {knock on wood} The idea of breaking a bone scares me more than probably necessary.

4. My family moved around a lot when I was growing up. I’ve lived in 4 states. I don’t know how many cities/towns, and honestly I don’t know how many houses/apartments.

5. For most of my life, I thought I didn’t like Mexican food. Over the past several years, thankfully, I have come to my senses. One of my all time favorite foods now is Chicken Enchiladas.

6. I have seen the musical Miss Saigon twice. {or is it three times?} The music is amazing & so is the story. The first time I saw it, I cried like a baby at the end.

7. Speaking of crying, my friends and I joke that I have a heart of stone. I don’t cry at movies that most women do. At the end of The Notebook they’re both doing the “ugly cry”, and I’m sitting there like nothing happened.

8. I love Jboy’s big toes. Seriously. They’re the cutest things ever.

9. My favorite genre of music is 80s music. Is that a genre?

10. It’s taken me a ridiculous amount of time to come up with these ten things.

Now, to pass the awards along. Here are 15 blogs/bloggers that I love. Pick whichever award you want to accept {even both} and then pay it forward:

Whatcha Reading Wednesday

I’m loving these bookish memes from Proud Book Nerd. This one is taking place at Busy Moms Who Love to Read.

Here’s how this one works…

Go to page 33, go to the 3rd full sentence and type in that sentence. If it is a spoiler at all be sure to put **Spoiler Alert** at the top of your comment (like if the selection announces the death of an integral character or something).

Here’s mine:
And the toddlers, scrunching up their face and sliding back toward Mom, say, in that distinctive toddler way, “Yeah, come to think of it, I am hurt.”

Parenting with Love & Logic by Foster Cline, MD & Jim Fay

Play along, won’t you?

Teaser Tuesday :: 6/1

teasertuesdayTeaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB  of Should Be Reading, that I found on Heather's blog, Proud Book Nerd. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Open to a random page.
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page.
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!(make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

19thwifeHere's mine:

After only a few months of marriage, Dee and I were in steady battle. He knew how to torture me and never once passed up the opportunity to turn the knife. -- page 261 of The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Teaser Tuesdays post, or share your 2 “teasers” in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks!

There was a time when we got together every month. Pretty much without fail. Now, life gets in the way all too often. Sometimes its months between times we're all together. This time, the Clavells & Thompsons hadn't seen each other since before Christmas! That's crazy!

When we first started "game night" it was just us and the Thompsons who, at the time were Kevin, Pam & Destiny. Shortly thereafter the Clavells started joining us. At the time, it was just Michael, Lisa & Victoria who was 4 months old. That was December 2002. Fast forward 7.5 years. Now Jboy has joined our family and is 3.5 years old! The Thompsons are now Kevin, Pam, Destiny {13!} and Ethan {3} and the Clavell brood has expanded to Michael, Lisa, Victoria {7}, Regan {4} and Elizabeth {will be 3 on 6.22}.

Needless to say, game nights have become louder & more chaotic. But, at the same time, more wonderful. I love that our kids are so close in age & play together well {mostly, LOL}. I hope that in 30 years, our kids will be having a "game night" of their own with our grandkids running around.

All that to say... Saturday we were able to get everone under one roof {and in one backyard} for the first time since before Christmas. Haley & her friend, Will were able to join us too. A great time was had by everyone.

Sadly, I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I should could have, but here are a few of my favorites... and they're not even of my kid!

I love the action in this one! Miss Regan running like a true athlete!

Sweet Elizabeth.

There's the Elizabeth we know & love! Super sweet & such a ham!

And... because I'd probably be disowned if I posted pictures of other people's kids without at least one of Jboy... here's a little slideshow of the few that I did manage to get of him. Enjoy!
